What are Varicose Veins?

When a vein becomes enlarged or twisted this is known as a varicose vein. Varicose veins are typically located in your legs due to the increased pressure from standing and walking. While varicose veins may cause no symptoms to some and simply be a cosmetic issue, they can also be a sign of more serious issues such as chronic venous hypertension. This can lead to skin damage, bleeding, clotting or phlebitis, and even leg wounds (venous ulcers).

Risk Factors

There are a handful of risk factors that can lead to you developing varicose veins. Risk factors include:

Obesity

A family history of varicose veins

Hormonal changes from pregnancy or menopause

Skin discoloration near the varicose veins

Itching around the varicose veins

How are Varicose Veins Diagnosed?

Varicose veins are typically diagnosed with a thorough history and exam. Often, varicose veins are directly visible on the surface, but many patients with vein disease do not actually bulging varicose veins visible to the eye. If you schedule an appointment with us, we’ll inspect your legs for swelling, pain, aching, and any other signs of varicose veins. If you have symptoms for vein reflux we will order an ultrasound (sonogram). The gold standard for assessing vein disease is to perform a venous ultrasound. Ultrasounds are used to see if the valves in your veins are functioning properly, to measure the size of your veins, and to assess for blood clots in your veins.

Treatment Options

There are plenty of less and non-invasive treatment options for varicose veins, which means your daily routine isn’t likely to be interrupted by treatment. Varicose veins are typically treated on an outpatient basis. In some cases, self-treatment can help improve your condition, such as regularly exercising, losing weight, wearing compression socks, elevating your legs, and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing. Compression socks can help to steadily squeeze your legs, which helps your blood to move more efficiently. If self-treatment doesn’t help your condition, we can help in several ways, including radiofrequency vein ablation, sclerotherapy, VenaSeal, Varithena and more.
