Implantable Loop Recorder

What is an implantable loop recorder (ILR)?

An implantable loop recorder is a small heart rhythm monitoring device that gets implanted just beneath the skin on the left side of the chest. It allows continuous monitoring of your heart rhythm for two to five years, with the longevity depending on the manufacturer.

Why is a loop recorder implanted?

There are many reasons that a loop recorder implant may be recommended. The most common reasons to implant an ILR include:

  • Determining the cause of palpitations
  • Identifying very fast or slow heartbeats
  • Using the rhythm information to guide antiarrhythmic and/or anticoagulation therapy
  • Looking for causes of fainting
  • Identifying hidden rhythms that can cause strokes

The information gathered on the ILR will help to make a definite diagnosis and allow a treatment plan to be developed for you.

How is a loop recorder implanted?

  • A loop recorder is implanted in the office under local anesthesia.
  • There will be a tiny incision (about 1 centimeter) and the device is inserted.
  • The incision is often closed internally with 1 dissolvable suture.
  • Dermabond, which is a topical skin adhesive (skin glue), will be placed over the top of the incision.
  • You will be shown how to use your home monitoring equipment, which will either be a remote transmitter box or an app on your phone. You will then be allowed to go home and may drive yourself if you desire.
