HEART ATTACK

If you’ve recently suffered from a heart attack, our cardiology team can develop a treatment plan to help you improve your condition. Heart attacks can be fatal, which is why it’s important to immediately seek medical attention. With the correct treatment, we can help you to improve your symptoms and decrease your chances of having another heart attack.

What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to your heart is blocked. This blockage is typically caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries from fat or cholesterol. If the plaque forms a clot and ruptures, this can damage or destroy parts of the heart muscle.

Risk Factors

Heart attacks are often caused by the fatty deposits that narrow your arteries. Other risk factors that can increase your chances of having a heart attack include:

Obesity

Tobacco use

A family history of heart attacks

Diabetes

Metabolic syndrome

High blood cholesterol

Stress

Drug use

Autoimmune conditions

A history of preeclampsia

Symptoms

If you’ve suffered from a heart attack, you’ve likely had some of these symptoms:

Fatigue

Pressure, pain, or tightness in your chest or arms. This can spread to the jaw, neck, and back

Cold sweat

Lightheadedness

While these are some common symptoms of a heart attack, not all people have the same signs. Some people may have milder symptoms, while others may have severe ones. Sometimes, no symptoms are seen at all. While you may have a sudden heart attack, most come with warning signs and symptoms anywhere from hours to weeks in advance.

How is a Heart Attack Diagnosed?

Heart attacks are typically diagnosed through an electrocardiogram or blood tests. An electrocardiogram records any electrical signals that are traveling through your heart by having electrodes, or sticky patches, attached to your chest. If you have an injured heart, the heart muscle won’t conduct the electrical impulses normally, which is a sign you have had a heart attack. Blood tests can also be used to test if certain heart proteins have leaked into your blood. This is also an indicator that you have suffered from a heart attack.

Treatment Options

Many medications can be taken for the treatment of a heart attack. Most often, you’ll be asked to take aspirin immediately to help reduce blood clotting. Other medications that could be prescribed as treatment include thrombolytics, beta-blockers, pain relievers, antiplatelet agents, and statins. Surgery may also be an option for treatment, depending on the condition of your heart.
