CHEST PAIN

If you’re experiencing chest pain, it’s always a good idea to have a cardiologist evaluate you. Visit us at Heart of Dixie Cardiology for a comprehensive exam to find the cause of your chest pain. In some cases, chest pain is related to serious heart problems that require urgent attention.

What is Chest Pain?

Heart-related chest pain is typically caused by plaque buildup in the arteries of the heart, which restricts blood. This buildup usually takes many years to develop to the point that it restricts blood flow down the arteries. When exertion places an increased demand on the heart, the decreased flow of blood and oxygen to the muscle of the heart causes pain and discomfort. This discomfort can range from a pressure or tightness to heaviness. If you are experiencing chest pain, call Heart of Dixie Cardiology now to make an appointment to be evaluated.

Testing

If you’re experiencing chest pain, we offer a variety of in-office diagnostic tests to help determine if your pain is related to a heart condition. Some of these diagnostic tests include an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and stress testing. Some stress tests involve walking on a treadmill, but others involve medication for those who are unable to walk on a treadmill. Call us for an evaluation today.

Treatment

Chest pain is treated differently depending on the cause of your chest pain. Some treatments may include the following:

Medication

  • There are medications to help dilate the arteries of the heart to alleviate discomfort.
  • Aspirin and antiplatelet medications help the platelets (clotting cells in your blood) be slipperier, which helps blood flow easier through the arteries of your heart.

Testing

  • Stress test : We perform this test to evaluate for blockages in the arteries of your heart.
  • Echocardiogram : This test evaluates the function and valves of your heart.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) : In an ECG, we evaluate the rhythm and electrical activity of your heart.

Procedures

  • Angiography: An angiogram is performed by one of our skilled cardiologists to evaluate arteries of your heart.
  • Stenting: Stents are often used to open the arteries and help with blood flow. Typically, we can place stents at the same time as angiography.
