ARTERIAL AND VENOUS ULTRASOUNDS

If you’re having issues with the blood flow in your arteries or veins, we can help at Heart of Dixie Cardiology. We specialize in arterial and venous ultrasounds. With these ultrasounds, we can look at your arteries and veins to determine any issues you may be having and take the correct course of action to treat any condition you may have.

What Are Arterial and Venous Ultrasounds?

Arteries take blood from your heart to your body and extremities; veins bring that blood from your body back to your heart. Several problems can occur with both sets of blood vessels. Arterial and venous ultrasounds take pictures of these vessels to look for poor functioning vessels, blood clots, pooling of blood, or restrictions of blood flow. These are imaged with an ultrasound machine.

Why Have an Arterial Ultrasound or Venous Ultrasound?

If you’re experiencing symptoms of swelling, cramping, pain, or discomfort when walking in your legs, these ultrasounds can often help us identify potential causes. Once we can identify the cause, we can offer treatments and procedures to help you feel better and be more active.

What Vascular Conditions Do These Ultrasounds Evaluate?

These two types of ultrasounds are commonly used to evaluate the veins and arteries of your legs. Common conditions diagnosed with these ultrasounds include:

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD):

plaque buildup and restrictions of blood flow in the arteries

Venous insufficiency:

pooling of blood in the veins due to dilation and poor valve in the veins

Lymphedema:

fluid and water retention that leaks out in the tissues, causing swelling

Blood clots:

also called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), these clots block flow through the vein and can be dangerous because they can travel to other parts of the body.

Varicose veins:

dilated enlarged veins that can cause pain and discomfort in the legs. These are poorly functioning veins.

Risks of Venous and Arterial Ultrasounds

Arterial and venous ultrasounds present no risks to the patients. Since it is a test that simply takes an ultrasound of your veins or arteries, there are no harmful effects.

What to Expect

During a vascular ultrasound, one of the specialized ultrasound technicians will place a transducer on your skin in the area being evaluated. You will need to change into a pair of shorts, and the transducer is run up and down the legs to evaluate the arteries or veins. Several measurements are taken during this imaging to determine the function of your blood vessels.

Results of an Arterial or Venous Ultrasound

After an arterial or venous ultrasound, your images will be reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist. If any abnormalities are found, we can offer treatments and procedures to get you back to normal. These may include:

Compression stockings

Medication management

We will work with you to determine the best treatment plan based on your symptoms and results.
