A cardioversion is a quick noninvasive procedure that is done under IV sedation. It is performed by a cardiologist or electrophysiologist to restore the heart back to normal rhythm. This is done by delivering an electrical shock through patches placed on the chest and back. This electrical shock suppresses the arrhythmia and allows the heart’s natural rhythm to take back over.
Arrhythmias can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, or lightheadedness. When arrhythmias become persistent, they can also lead to fatigue, heart failure, or weakness of the heart muscle. A cardioversion is used to restore normal rhythm, alleviate symptoms, and prevent (or treat if already present) arrhythmia complications.
